- PRE-SHOW: Enzo & Cass vs. Gallows & Anderson
This was your standard tag match that you might see on Raw, but got the crowd going for the night and this crowd stayed red hot for almost the entire show. Enzo & Cass win with a roll up.
- MIZ TV: With Guest Finn Balor
Balor makes a joke that all MIZ TV segments end with Miz getting his ass kicked and then proves himself right by kicking Miz’s ass.
- Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owen’s (c) for the United States Championship
There was a lot of good story telling in this match along with the great chemistry that we have come to expect with Owens and Jericho. In my crash course column from last week I predicted, and was fairly confident in the fact, that Owens would walk out as champion. Also meaning that Jericho would remain on Raw. However, just to ruin all my credibility, Jericho picked up the win over Owens in a shocking victory. Not only is Jericho now United States Champion, but he is also the newest member to the Smackdown Live roster. DRINK IT INNN MANNNNNN.
- Austin Aries vs. Neville (c) for the Cruiserweight Championship
These two tore the house down and put on a hard hitting and for the most part, fast paced match. In an interesting heel move, Neville used the ref to get out of the Last Chancery resulting in a DQ finish. Since the title can not change on a DQ, Neville walks out of Payback still the Cruiserweight Champion. Looks like no one is on the Neville Level.
- Cesaro & Sheamus vs. The Hardy Boys for the Raw Tag Team Championships
This was a great match and in my opinion the best match of the night. The end came when Sheamus went to pin what he thought was the legal man Matt Hardy. However, Jeff made the blind tag and delivered a Swanton Bomb to Sheamus during the confusion. The Hardys retained their titles and both teams shook hands after the match. Shortly after, Cesaro and Sheamus attacked the Hardys and held up their newly won titles. Will we see Broken Hardys on Raw?
- Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley (c) for the Raw Women’s Championship
In the second big shocker of the night, Bayley defends her Raw Women’s Championship against Alexa Bliss. For a match with a lackluster build, it ended up being really good. Alexa Bliss picked up the victory over Bayley and not only became the new Raw Women’s Champion, but also the first women to hold both the Raw and Smackdown Women’s Championships.
- Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton in a House of Horrors Match.
Although my predictions for this show were slightly off, I believe I hit the nail on the head with this one. I predicted some 2000s WCW shit here and that’s what we got. Orton and Bray brawl all over this creepy, poorly lit house, and Bray tries to murder Orton with a refrigerator. No you didn’t read that wrong, Bray toppled a refrigerator into Orton and leaves. Bray gets in a limo and leaves for the arena. To be continued… unfortunately.
- Seth Rollins vs. Somoa Joe
For some reason I couldn’t get behind this match on the Road to Payback because Joe wasn’t at Wrestlemania. I know that’s not a qualification to be on the card, but it felt strange. Anyway, it’s a decent match between the two with Rollins getting a victory with a modified roll up.
- House of Horrors (Part 2)
Back by popular demand, Bray rolls into the arena doing his standard entrance for the crowd. When the lights come back on Orton is standing behind Bray. I’m going to stop here for a second. Last we saw Orton he was crushed by a refrigerator. Now this is wrestling and I’m willing to stretch my imagination to assume he got up like a superhero and limped out of this single family home. However, how the hell did he get back to the arena after Bray jacked his ride?? I’m going to assume he took an Uber or actually probably a Lyft since this was in San Jose, and got back to the arena. Granted he probably got a horrible star rating for having no shirt on and reeking of baby dolls and excess refrigerator fluid. Not to mention, he was probably in a bad mood and gave his Lyft driver a bad review in return out of pure anger. Speaking of anger, Jinder and the Bollywood Boys attack Orton giving the Bray the victory. Let’s not talk about this one again.
- MAIN EVENT: Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns
Good hard hitting match between these two. Strowman wins with not one but two running powerslams. What happens after the match is what matters most. Strowman attacks Roman with steel steps and crushes his sternum. This in turn causes Roman to spit up blood as the crowd chants YOU DESERVE IT and THANK YOU STROWMAN. This is some DIE ROCKY DIE level shit. The show goes off the air to Roman refusing to get on a stretcher and can you blame the guy? Look what happened last time he agreed to do that.
With the Road to Payback 2017 coming to an end, I have to say that it blew my expectations. The confusing road to this show along with some weird gimmicks set my expectations very low. However, there were some awesome matches along with a great ending segment. I could have gone without the House of Horrors match, but that will be a fun thing to just never talk about again. A new road has now begun for Monday Night Raw and I can’t believe I have to type this out but, we are now on the Road to Great Balls of Fire right here on BeerSpit: Fresh Content. Great Culture. Served Daily.
