Mae Young Classic 2017 Episodes 5-8 Crash Course

We are officially in the second half of the Mae Young Classic. What was once 32 women has been narrowed down to the sweet sixteen. A pinfall or submission results in the loser going home in this single elimination tournament. Who will come out on top and be able to claim they won the inaugural Mae Young Classic on the WWE Network? Let’s get to it.

Episode #5

Abbey Laith def. Rachel Evers via pinfall

The crowd is split for this one and it was a hot start to round 2 of the Mae Young Classic. Both Evers and Laith Bicycle Kick each other in the middle of match and the two are done with a hot crowd behind them. Evers hits a top rope powerslam and it looked like that would do it, but Laith kicks out at two. Laith hits a Powerbomb into a stack up cover for the pinfall victory. Abbey Laith advances.

Piper Niven def. Serena Deeb via pinfall

The powerhouse Piper Niven takes on the come back story of Serena Deeb. Surprisingly Deeb has the early advantage in this one until the weight difference catches up to her. Niven hits an Avalanche Drop from the second rope shifting the momentum of the match. A Michinoku Driver by Niven gets her the pinfall victory. Piper Niven advances.

Mercedes Martinez def. Princesa Surgehit via pinfall

Not a great match here, but a cool down before the main event for the crowd. Mercedes Martinez hits a Fisherman’s Buster for the pinfall victory. Mercedes Martinez advances.

Kairi Sane def. Bianca Belair via pinfall

I would argue this was the best round 2 match of the Mae Young Classic. These two are absolute stars and it was a win win situation here. Bianca Belair hit a picture perfect 450 splash that looked like it could have been the finish, but Sane kicks out at 2. Sane hits her patented Elbow Drop from the top rope getting her the pinfall victory. Kairi Sane advances.

Episode #6

Toni Storm def. Lacey Evans

A weak opening match to episode 6 here. Lacey Evans looked like the favorite to win based on the commentary coming from Lita and JR. However, Toni Storm hit a Celtic Cross on her knee for the pinfall victory. Toni Storm advances.

Shayna Baszler def. Mia Yim via submission

A good mix of styles in this match with Shayna Baszler looking more and more badass every time we see her. The finish to this was spectacular with Mia Yim hitting a 450 Splash only to be caught in a Rear Naked Choke by Baszler. After the match we see a confrontation between the Four Horsewomen of WWE and MMA. Do I smell a Survivor Series match on the horizon? Talk about a license to print money.

Dakota Kai def. Rhea Ripley via pinfall

Another awesome match her and a win win situation for us fans. The match starts off hot with Rhea Ripley giving Dakota Kai a bitch plant on the apron outside the ring. Kai pulls it together and hits a Double Stomp to Rhea who is hanging from the ropes, Del Rio style. This is enough to get Kai the pinfall victory. Dakota Kai advances.

Candice Larae def. Nicole Savoy via pinfall

Not a great main event here, although to be fair, it had big shoes to fill from the last episode. Johnny Gargano is at ringside to support Candice. At one point Nicole Savoy sloppily drops Larae on the back of her neck, but she is able to continue. Larae hits Mrs. Larae’s Wild Ride for the pinfall victory. Once again, don’t google that kids. Candice Larae advances.

Episode #7

Mercedes Martinez def. Abbey Laith via pinfall

Throughout this tournament I had trouble getting behind either of these women, but a decent match to start off episode 7. Laith goes for a crossbody outside the ring and nails her knee of the ramp. Looked like it could have been bad, but turned out to be fine. Mercedes Martinez hits her Fisherman Buster once again for the pinfall victory. Mercedes Martinez advances.

Shayna Baszler def. Candice Larae via submission

The badass of MMA, Shayna Baszler is back and this time her victim is none other than Candice Larae. Candice goes for Mrs. Larae’s Wild Ride which has found her many victories this tournament, but it is revered into a Rear Naked Choke by Baszler. Larae has no choice but to tap out. Shayna Baszler advances.

Toni Storm def. Piper Niven via pinfall

Interesting match between these two with some interesting spots. One spot was both women bridged up from the mat and shook hands as a sign of respect. Niven hit her Michinoku Driver and got a nearfall. Toni Storm eventually hit a Leg Drop off the top rope for the pinfall victory. Toni Storm advances.

Kairi Sane def. Dakota Kai via pinfall

I had high expectations for this match as both these women are spectacular in the ring. Although it wasn’t quite as good as their sweet sixteen match, it was still a great main event. Kairi Sane proved to be the better women when she hit her top rope Elbow Drop for the pinfall victory.

Episode #8

Shayna Baszler def. Mercedes Martinez via submission

This last episode was to determine who were the final two that will meet in Las Vegas immediately after Smackdown Live on the WWE Network. A great match from these two, but once again Shayna Baszler showed why she was so successful in MMA. A Rear Naked Choke gives Baszler the submission victory. Shayna Baszler advances to the finals.

Kairi Sane def. Toni Storm

All tournament long Kairi Sane has been putting on great matches and this was no exception. Toni Storm did her fair share of carrying in this match too. Early on in the match, Kairi goes for a dive to the outside and bangs her face off the steel ramp. She wears bruises on her face the whole match. Once again Kairi Sane goes for her top rope Elbow Drop and gets the pinfall victory. Kairi Sane advances to the finals.
